HANSON — Chief Michael Miksch of the Hanson Police Department reports that the Town of Hanson has been named one of the safest cities in the state according to a new report from Alarms.org, the official site of the National Council for Home Safety and Security (NCHSS).
Hanson ranked 47th on the NCHSS 2020 Safest Cities in Massachusetts report, which evaluated violent crime and property crime statistics from 2018 as well as law enforcement employees per 1,000 residents.
According to the report, Hanson recorded 30 violent crimes in 2018 (8.1 per 1,000 residents), as well as 58 property crimes (2.76 per 1,000 residents). The town has 25 law enforcement employees (2.3 employees per 1,000 residents).
The report included statistics from the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report. The FBI defines a violent crime as an offense that involves force or threat of force, such as murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Property crime includes the offenses of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft and arson.
“We are very pleased to have been ranked as one of the top 50 safest cities in the state,” Chief Miksch said. “Our scores are a result of the hard work and dedication of our Police Department, Fire Department, and other town officials who work every day to make Hanson as safe as possible for our residents.”
At the state level, Massachusetts had a violent crime rate 8% below the national average and a property crime rate that was 57% of the national level. The state’s cities earned six spots in the ranking of the 10 safest cities in the nation.
