S.M.A.R.T. Unit

The S.M.A.R.T. Unit oversees the use of the Speed Monitoring Awareness Radar Trailer or S.M.A.R.T. –  a traffic enforcement tool, which promotes safe community driving. Drivers approaching the S.M.A.R.T will see the posted speed limit as well as their vehicle’s speed detected by the unit’s radar. The S.M.A.R.T. also records other important information as it monitors traffic, including the total number of vehicles on the road and their average speeds.

To promote safe driving throughout the neighborhoods and thoroughfares of Hanson, the S.M.A.R.T. is placed at common areas for speeding and at accident locations, as well as in areas requested by residents and business owners. Use of the S.M.A.R.T greatly aids in educating the public, as many drivers are unaware of their driving speeds or are not aware of the local speed limits.

The S.M.A.R.T. was funded in part by a grant award from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.

Residents who would like to make a request that the S.M.A.R.T unit be placed in their neighborhoods should contact:
